Inspiration
Aventi has always sought to push the boundaries of horological design and material science. The vision behind the Chroma SapphireTM case was to create a timepiece that not only captured attention with its aesthetics but also challenged conventional materials. Drawing inspiration from the rare and mesmerizing color-changing property of natural alexandrite, caused by its high chromium content, Aventi envisioned a watch that could transition from a vibrant pink in daylight to a warm champagne hue under softer lighting, symbolizing the elegant duality of day and night. This innovative concept aimed to set a new standard in the luxury watch industry by merging the visual allure of color transformation with the robustness and clarity of sapphire.

Development Journey
Initial Challenges
Material Properties
Traditional sapphire, while celebrated for its hardness and clarity, does not naturally change color. Creating a material that could mimic the pleochroism of natural gemstones like alexandrite within a sapphire-like crystal was an immense challenge. Aventi needed to develop a material that not only exhibited this dynamic color change but also maintained the durability and scratch resistance synonymous with sapphire.
Industry Skepticism
Esteemed gemologists and material scientists across Thailand, Israel, and India were initially skeptical of the feasibility of this vision. They believed that achieving such a complex and precise material transformation with current technologies was impossible. Overcoming this skepticism required Aventi to pioneer new techniques and methodologies in material science.
Breakthroughs
Proprietary Mix Development
After extensive research and numerous experiments, Aventi developed a proprietary mix combining high-purity alumina with carefully selected trace elements, among which the right quantity of chromium. This blend allows the crystal structure to exhibit pleochroism, resulting in the desired color change. The exact composition of these trace elements remains a closely guarded secret, contributing to the exclusivity of the Chroma Sapphire™.
Controlled Cooling Process
The breakthrough came with mastering the controlled cooling process. By carefully managing the temperature gradients during the slow cooling phase, large, clear crystals were formed with the necessary internal structure to allow the color-changing effect. This process, which takes several days, is crucial to avoiding internal stresses and ensuring the crystal's integrity and transparency.

Ingredients
The base material, high-purity alumina, is meticulously mixed with trace elements that enable the Chroma Sapphire™ to change color. These elements are chosen for their ability to alter light absorption and reflection at different wavelengths.
Mixing Process
The mixture is heated to a molten state at temperatures exceeding 2,000°C, ensuring the complete integration of all components. The molten alumina is then poured into a custom mold to cool slowly under precisely controlled conditions.
Controlled Cooling
The cooling process is the most critical step, requiring a gradual reduction in temperature to allow the crystal structure to slowly develop layer by layer. This ensures the absence of cracks, inclusions, or other imperfections, resulting in a flawless, color-changing crystal.

Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM)
The large Chroma Sapphire™ blocks are cut into rough case blanks using EDM technology. This process uses a fine wire and electrical discharges to slice through the sapphire crystal, minimizing mechanical stress and preserving the material's integrity.
Precision Cutting
Each blank is cut with micrometer precision, ensuring that the material is ready for the subsequent detailed machining process.

Setup
The rough blanks are secured using custom-designed clamps that gently hold the Chroma Sapphire™ crystals without causing any surface damage or inducing stress fractures.
Machining Process
The case is machined using a 5-axis CNC machine equipped with six different diamond-tipped cutting tools, ranging from 2mm for initial cuts to 0.3mm for fine detailing. This machine allows for the creation of complex shapes and tight tolerances, sculpting the case’s 92 facets with incredible precision.
Lubrication and Cooling
A specialized cutting fluid is continuously applied during machining to reduce heat buildup and prevent thermal shock, which could compromise the crystal structure.

Initial Buffing
The case undergoes an initial buffing process using specialized compounds designed to enhance both clarity and the unique color-changing properties of Chroma Sapphire™. This step is crucial for removing any micro-abrasions or surface imperfections left by the machining process.
Microscopic Inspection
After this stage, each case is inspected under high magnification to ensure that the surface is flawless and ready for the final polish.
Final Polish:
The case is then subjected to a meticulous final polishing process, using ultra-fine compounds to achieve a perfectly smooth surface. This finish not only enhances the case's aesthetic appeal but also accentuates the pleochroic effect, allowing the watch to shimmer and change color under different lighting conditions.
